In 2010, Almighty's anniversary year, the demand for Almighty the remixers has returned thanks to Matt Waterhouse, who represents all the top UK remix teams as MWR, (Matt Waterhouse Represents). Matt manages many popular producers, remixers and some as artists, including Cahill, Digital Dog, Jason Nevins, Moto Blanco, Soul Seekerz, StoneBridge and Wideboys to name but a few! Recent re-mixes from Almighty include Agnes, Alcazar, Alexandara Burke, The Saturdays, Usher and Katherine Jenkins!
We would like to say a special thanks to Stephen Munns who pointed EMI in Almighty’s remix direction with a special commemorative package of Cilla Black remixes which were created by Almighty. The album was conceived as a fun and funky way to celebrate Cilla's 45th year in the music biz. An array of original hit singles and album tracks held at Abbey Road were given a club makeover - four of them by Almighty. We were delighted to be involved with this project.
Almighty Records are known the world over for our technicolour transformations of chart hits and pop classics into stomping, euphoric club tracks.
Our crack team of dance wizards conjure up a spine-tingling aural apparition from the most basic ingredients of a song, then invoke one of our spellbinding singers to deliver the hook that has everyone flying, with their hands in the air.
But as well as our home-grown hits, a whole host of hot acts have called in the Almighty Mix Angels over the years, to sprinkle some fairy dust over their tracks in the shape of an Almighty Remix.
While Almighty have been showering sunshine and fun times on the UK club scene since back in 1990, it would be several years before an Almighty Remix became de rigueur, and the most in-demand name in the pop-dance world.
Music mega-corp Sony can take a bow as the first company to invite an Almighty Mix upon their artists. Delighted with the early results, they went on over the years to enlist our services for such diverse acts as alluring Antipodeans Savage Garden, Eurovision sensation Dana International, Cabaret star Liza Minelli, and New Romantic rakes Duran Duran, not to mention US stars Anastasia and J-Lo.
Flushed with our early success, we took on more and more commissions, knowing that every project completed took the Almighty brand and sound one step further into the dancefloors and bedrooms of the nation.
But for things to really explode, it took a little help from one of the defining divas of our (or any other!) generation… Cheryl Sarkisian LaPiere!
Cher staged one of the greatest comebacks in pop music history in 1998, when she unveiled the all-conquering dance anthem ‘Believe’ and its accompanying album - and Almighty were right there with her.
While ‘Believe’ ruled the airwaves from Britannia to Brisbane, her management asked us to remix three more tracks from the album (as well as two from its follow-up), in a move that would underline her reinvention as a dance-pop demi-goddess, and help her regain pole position in the playlists of every gay club in the world.
The ravishing results of ‘Believe’, ‘Strong Enough’, ‘All Or Nothing’ and ‘Dove l’Amore’ would act as ambassadors for Almighty’s magical mix powers, and supply the sonic sampler we needed to whet the music industry’s appetite and leave everyone wanting a taste. (Meanwhile, our most sought-after Cher Megamix has remained under wraps!)
The offers came in thick and fast, and we accepted them all! No pop star too big, no project too small – Almighty The Remixers had arrived, and we were eager to show the world just what they’d been missing.
The Almighty remix team became a well-oiled pop machine, the Hit Factory of the late 90s; our label heads decided the musical direction that each track would follow, then our mysterious assortment of pop warlocks and techno sorcerers would take their lead in crafting the next seductive slice of sensory overload.
Contrary to popular misconception, we don’t need to bring the stars themselves into the studio, or even meet them most of the time – we simply slice up the sounds they’ve already recorded, and uncover the dazzling dance anthem within, begging to be heard. This way we get to spend more time on the music, and less time rolling out Almighty Towers’ luxurious red carpet and meeting the myriad diva demands - thank goodness!
By the end of the 90s, Almighty had become, without a doubt, the definitive remixers du jour, receiving the baton from previous top dogs Motiv8, as clubbers across the land turned their sexy backs on the harsher sounds of the prevailing house scene towards candy beats and tuneful treats which were altogether more light-hearted, more care-free, more pop. It was no coincidence that this was the time of Popstars and Pop Idol, as the ‘reality’ TV explosion brought pop back to the top where it belonged.
In the years since the monster success of the Cher project and the Queer As Folk phenomenon forced Almighty into the spotlight, a few of the massive mixes we unleashed on the eager pop public have included Leann Rimes ‘Can’t Fight The Moonlight’, Kylie’s ‘Your Disco Needs You’, Vanessa Amorosi ‘Absolutely Everybody’ and Sugababes ‘Stronger’.
We’ve worked with all of the biggest, and most of the coolest, record labels around, who have given us a galaxy of their brightest stars to shine with. For Virgin and EMI, we’ve remixed everyone from Kylie and Pet Shop Boys to Debbie Harry, Atomic Kitten and two ex-Spice Girls. For Warner, not only Cher, but Agnetha Faltskog (ABBA!), Holly Valance and the younger Minogue, the dance-loving Miss Dannii. On the other hand, our relationship with BMG has seen hits for superstars Usher, Pink, Westlife, Steps and Gloria Gaynor.
But record labels don’t get any bigger than Universal, and recently the two of us have been the closest of bedfellows. In 2006, they became our preferred partner, and worldwide digital distributor (excluding North America), enabling us eventually to make all your favourite Almighty Records mixes available for all time on the top internet download sites. At the same time, Almighy have over the years successfully increased the Universal appeal of the likes of Soft Cell, Girls Aloud, Donna Summer, Shania Twain, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Sugababes and Dame Elton John herself!
The last decade has seen great changes in the dance music world, as fashions fade and formats fail. The time of the physical single as a commercial force is all but over, and as a result the traditional remix is no longer the marketing mainstay it once was. Back when Almighty was a new kid on the remix block, competition was fierce and creativity high, and every big act wanted their tunes on the turntables in the coolest clubs around. These days it’s a different affair, with remixes more often a chance for budding producers to showcase their flair, and less so a lucrative new market for labels to engage with.
Almighty’s own remix activities have settled down since the frenzied peak of the millennium, and finishing five fab mixes a week; just as all art must abide by tectonic cultural shifts, every remix team has its time in the fierce sun of fashion, before pop tastes move on to the next big thing. Now in 2006, funky house is the undisputed king.
But here at Almighty we are far from relinquishing the remix world, and are in fact in a unique position, having enjoyed continuous success throughout the last eight years. How have we done it? Well, as always, we’ve just kept our finger on the pulse of the dance music scene and as new styles have changed and developed, so have we.
Right now, thanks again to our friends at Universal, we’re working on one of the most exciting projects in all of our history. Instead of jumping on the latest pop bandwagon, we’re travelling back through time to a golden age of music, a time when funky basslines hugged your hips, sparkling melodies stroked your soul, and the stars of the stage knew the true meaning of glamour: Motown!
Not only are we turning our hand to the fabulous songs from the original production of the legendary Dream Girls show (soon to be brought to life on the silver screen in a major movie adaptation featuring the silk-smooth James Foxx and the bootylicious Beyoncé). We’re also heading straight for the source, the real-life inspiration for the Dream Girls story: Diana Ross & the Supremes.
In collaboration with Universal/Motown, we’re busy reinventing a string of soul classics for a Diana Ross ‘Best Of’ remix compilation – and we have the original, timeless, studio master recordings in our hands, to work from. Certainly a dream come true for the soul buffs at Almighty, and a rare treat for fans everywhere of some of the greatest pop songs of the twentieth century!
Now, to celebrate the glittering history and promise-filled future of Almighty The Remixers, we’ve compiled a brand new, comprehensive Remixography, which for the first time reveals the breathtaking range of songs that we’ve worked on, and the myriad releases on which you can find them.
Happy pop hunting!
***All our thanks go out to Mobius alone, whose stellar work collating the data and filtering through the Almighty back catalogue made this project possible***
